Download video to local storage?

Postby rickhuizinga » Wed Aug 24, 2011 10:19 pm

Is there any video app that is compatible with RemotePotato that can save the stream to local storage for offline viewing?

This would be really handy when staying in hotels where the available bandwidth is often insufficient or too erratic for streaming.

Thanks.

Hi Rick,

Some considerations:

- Recorded TV is stored in .wtv format which becomes huge very fast (around 2Gb per hour or so). Theses sizes almost mandate that copying over the files to local storage is done while the Remote Potato server and the local storage are connected to the same LAN network, in which case you could copy the files through Windows Explorer also.

- There are several ways to access (windows) shares remotely so you can copy content to local storage, but i agree it would be a nice touch if Remote Potato incorporated an option "Save locally" besides the option "Play". What client platform are you interested in (PC HTML Interface & Sliverlight interface, iOS apps, Android client)?

You would just need video capture software, there is an api for it in android

I'm not looking at saving the source media, but saving the transcoded stream to local storage rather than to a video player.

The goal is to save the stream to storage is the available bandwidth is insufficient to play the video without hiccups.
